MENTAL HEALTH MATTERS: The cost of the media’s inaccurate portrayal of mental illness and psychotherapy

One of the recurring issues in treating people who suffer from mental health issues is the stigma attached to seeking help.

Some studies have suggested that the portrayal of mental illness and psychotherapy in popular culture outlets has had a significant effect on the general public’s beliefs about mental illness. It is not uncommon for the media’s portrayal of the field of psychology to lead to confusion, fear or contempt of the behavioral sciences in the eyes of the public.
