Mad, bad or just fed up? A look at violence and mental illness

FAIRBANKS — Every day, violence spatters across newspaper headlines like fresh blood, staining American minds with terror and indignation.

 Desperate for answers, many people blame the savagery on mental illness. The loudest accusations come from people who haven’t the faintest understanding of mental illness. Like colonists who imagined witchcraft caused their misfortunes, fear and ignorance lead present-day Americans to despise gentle friends and neighbors because they suffer afflictions that are as common as high blood pressure.
